Antique Corner Basin petite – Sphinx, c. 1925
This charming antique corner basin was made by the Dutch firm Sphinx around 1925. The design had already been popular since the turn of the century thanks to its compact size – perfect for the very small toilets of the time. In fact, some spaces were so tiny that basins were mounted outside the toilet on the hallway wall.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, these basins gradually became simpler in shape. This early 1920s example, however, still retains a delightful detail: a gently inward-sloping rim that subtly channels water back towards the waste. An ingenious and endearing feature that sets it apart from later, more streamlined models.
Its compact dimensions make it perfect for small cloakrooms, yet it also works beautifully as an authentic touch in a period-style bathroom. Pair it with a traditional wall-mounted tap to complete its nostalgic charm.
A fine example of Dutch sanitary design from the interwar period – and a rare piece to come across today.
Dimensions: 24 cm from corner, 27 cm in diagonal.
