Rare Antique Toilet Paper Holder

A rare antique toilet paper holder from the late nineteenth century, dating from a time before the familiar toilet roll existed, when toilet paper was supplied as loose individual sheets. The housing is made of nickel-plated brass and looks particularly refined thanks to the delicately pierced fretwork on the front, while the gracefully curved backplate lends the whole piece a slightly stately air.

Its use is as simple as it is curious: the top plate slides forward, creating a space to insert a packet of loose sheets — or, just as easily today, a pack of moist tissues. On top sits a knob that originally served as a resting place for a cigar or cigarette, a small detail that hints the nineteenth-century toilet doubled as something of a smoking retreat. A genuine pierced brass holder with a story, ready to serve once again in a classic bathroom or powder room.
