Description

Antique porcelain wall lamp with opaline Carré shade — early 1920s

A fine antique porcelain wall lamp with an opaline 'Carré' shade, made in the early 1920s. Lamps of this kind were often produced in porcelain because the material does not conduct electricity — a sensible choice in an age when electric lighting was still young and damp rooms like bathrooms and kitchens called for extra caution. The solid porcelain wall fitting carries a crisply formed square opaline shade that casts a soft, diffuse light and lends a discreet Art Deco touch with its geometric lines.

The opaline shade is perfectly intact and the porcelain is in beautiful condition. The lamp retains its original bayonet socket; bayonet bulbs are still readily available today, and a small bayonet-to-screw adapter is easy to fit if preferred. A charming piece of vintage bathroom lighting that brings the warmth of an old French interior with it — just as much at home in a classical bathroom as in a hallway, landing or pantry.
