Description

Antique porcelain wall lamp with opaline Onde shade — early 1920s

A fine antique porcelain wall lamp with an opaline 'Onde' shade, made in the early 1920s. Lamps of this kind were often produced in porcelain because the material does not conduct electricity — a sensible choice in an age when electric lighting was still young and damp rooms like bathrooms and kitchens called for extra caution. The solid porcelain wall fitting carries a softly curved opaline shade with wave-like lines that casts a warm, diffuse light.

The lamp is in very good condition, with a flawless and clear opaline shade and porcelain showing no notable wear. The wall mount fixes simply to the wall with two screws. The original bayonet socket is still in place; bayonet bulbs are still readily available today, and a small bayonet-to-screw adapter is easy to fit if preferred. A charming piece of vintage bathroom lighting that brings the warmth of an old French interior with it — just as much at home in a classical bathroom as in a hallway, landing or pantry.

Features:

  • Porcelain wall mount with opaline (milk-glass) shade in Onde (wave) form
  • Softly undulating shape — typical of the early 1920s
