Pair of antique glass-shelf brackets stamped Louvre Paris — Grands Magasins du Louvre, circa 1900
A beautiful set of antique shelf brackets, made around 1900 for the Grands Magasins du Louvre in Paris and still bearing the store's recognisable hallmark. Founded in 1855 by the Pereire brothers inside the Hôtel du Louvre, this legendary store stood alongside Le Bon Marché as one of the very first grand Parisian department stores, famed for its lavish sanitary and homeware departments. When it closed its doors in 1974, a piece of Parisian retail history vanished with it — items bearing this stamp are sought-after collector's pieces today.
The brackets are crafted in nickel-plated brass with gracefully pierced wall plates in the same keyhole motif used throughout the Louvre bathroom range. Each holder is fitted with a small screw on top that locks the glass shelf in place — an uncommon detail that is almost always missing from comparable antique brackets. The glass itself is not included but can be cut to any length, so the planchet fits perfectly to any washstand. The nickel reveals just a whisper of brass beneath here and there — a gentle patina that adds character rather than detracts.
